What Color Do I Paint My Kitchen Cabinets To Compliment Black Appliances, Dark Countertops & Oak Floors?
My kitchen cabinets need help! My house is a 1970′s ranch. It has a large L-shaped kitchen/dining room(16 x 24). I installed new countertops (jamocha granite) in colors of black, dk brown, and tans. I also installed all new appliances in black. The backsplash is painted in Sherwin Williams Barcelona Beige. The floors are a medium oak. The cabinets are in good condition, but they just look “old school”. They are made of birch with an old oak finish(no design, flat surface). With the style from the 70′s, the cabinets go to ceiling and have two doors on top of each other. The top door is 16″ and the bottom is 22″. I’m sure I don’t have to mention the ugly old hardware, which I want to replace. For now, painting will be my only option until I have the money to buy new cabinets. I would like a cabinet color that will compliment my counter, appliances, floors, backsplash, and adjacent dining room, which the walls are also painted SW-Barcelona Beige. I would appreciate any suggestions.

If it were me I would paint all the molding and trim a high gloss white including the frame of the cabinets. Paint all of the doors and fronts of the drawers the same color(Barcelona Beige) of your wall and backsplash. I just did this for myself and it came out wonderful. It adds a lot of contrast and depth to old cabinets and entire kitchen.
I always like bold colors. Sherwin Williams “Tanger” is very nice.

With your current hardware sprayed a shiny black. This should look nice. I love the color visualizer and there is a kitchen with about the same likeness as your’s on there.
hm my kitchen is kinda like that and my cabinets aren’t painted, they’re like a medium brown like this: http://www.silverfernconstructionremodel…
those are oak like your finish so maybe you could change the handles on your cabinets to update them.
if they still look bad, you could paint them like an off white like this: http://scripps-content.communicationsmgr…
good luck
How about a smoky blue or green? Something like “Artichoke”, “Coastal Plain” or “Riverway” from this site:http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/
Accordint to SW’s online color visualizer, “dapper tan” (# 6144) is their suggested accent color for Barcelona Beige. So how about that? http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/
Maybe just clean them if they need it and get new hardware for them? Or maybe be bold and do a very light blue,or mauve color? Good luck:)
white with new silver/brushed nickle hardware.
I would keep it simple and go with an off white. You have already enough colour accents in your kitchen; an additional colour would probably annul their effect and may annoy you easily. Also, any striking colour would simply draw the attention to the old cabinets and the hardware you find ugly. The contrast of an off-white with black will create a look that is more modern, while the oak floor will make sure that it is still homey. Make sure it matches the Barcelona Beige well (it should be brighter than that).
Hmmm, I’m thinking of a shade of med to darker olive green. Its a very in color now, and I love it. You can’t go with light colored cabinets since the blacksplash is light, but you don’t want to go to dark that the cabinets blend into appliances and counter top.Olive green is a nice choice because, though its a color, its still neutral. You could add to the intrest by destressing them, which would give them more character. if you plan on sanding the cabinets, it would make this easier, or you might actually be able to use the already there wood stain color. After you paint let it drie, then take a fine sander to the edges and corners, just enough that the stain shows through. If it was me, I’d beat the crap out of them before painting to give it a more authentic aged look. Also there is an aging paint you can put over top the finished paint, then wipe off and it leaves behind brown in the grooves and just gives things a really nice rustic flare.
