The Pilot Light On My Stove Went Out, The Gas People Came Out To Fix It And Now Its On – Why Did It Go Out?

I don’t understand why it went out – i’ve been living here a year and it’s never gone out. I had smelled smoke, called the gas company and they came out and turned it back on. Is it safe to go to sleep tonight? Why would the pilot light on my stove go out?

  1. HI 1st,,, that wasnt smoke you smelled,, it was gas leaking,,if the pilot was out.. gas has a odor put in to smell to warn you ,,if the pilot is out or if there is a leak…….
Why dont you get someone to show you how to light it yourself,,and quit being a wussy about it…..
They just go out sometimes… no particular reason… so be a Man and learn how to re – light it,,,,,,
    good luck

  2. if you live in the U.S. you should be safe enough to go to sleep. here there are thermocouples to shut off the gas if the pilot goes out. consequently, .whenever the thermocouple goes bad, the pilot will not stay lit. as far as it going out, sometimes just a little puff of air will hit it just right and blow it out.. or it could have been an interruption in your gas supply. i cannnot offer any answers for anywhere else other than the U.S.

  3. I have had pilot lights go out on me before. Not sure why perhaps a strong breeze thru an open window or a fan in the kitchen area this time of year maybe? And I don,t know why you would smell smoke. You could have caught a wiff of the gas but that smell is not like smoke. I guess just keep a close eye on it for a few days.

  4. Low gas pressure in the line, Dirty pilots, Even a mouse running in the stove could do it. Not a big deal to light. Usually a match will relight them. The smell is a additive put in to the gas to detect leaks. Natual gas has no smell otherwise.
