Is It A Good Idea To Hook Up A Gas Stove On My Own With Modest Plumbing Skills?

Build Your Own Wood Burning Pizza Oven

Most people can do this themselves. I would recommend a new flex hose just to be safe. We always use the long (48″) ones so you can pull it out for cleaning without disconnecting each time.
Just shut the gas off behind the stove, install the new flex, hook it up to the stove, turn the gas on and check for leaks. To check for leaks fill a spray bottle with a mix of dish detergent and water and spray the 2 fittings where the flex connects. Look carefully for bubbles around the connections. If bubbles occur there are leaks. Tighten the flex and try again.

  1. Are you asking about the connection between the gas valve and stove? If so, I don’t see what the big deal is. You need to know how to check for leaks, but it literally is screwing two threaded connections together.
As for the “gas is flammable, you might die” argument. Then by that standard, you should not fill up your car with gasoline; should not use oil based paint; should not use flammable solvents in the garage; etc.

  2. If you mess up on a sink install what is the worst thing that can happen?
    Some water damage.
If you mess up on a gas line installation what is the worst thing that can happen?
Your house burns down and your family dies.
Sounds like an easy choice to me.

  3. Assuming there are no conversions necessary, yes you should be able to do it. Check for leaks as noted above. If there is a conversion necessary (Nat to propane) then no, hire someone qualified to do the conversion.

  4. You probably are capable of doing it but get a pro. If there are any new codes, materials, methods, etc., a professional should know. Also if anything went wrong he would be partly responsible.
