  1. You need to tell the council that you are pregnant and that there is a child under 5 in the house. They will then have to treat any repair in your home that causes you to have substandard living conditions as an emergency. Faulty electrics is a hazard in itself with a 4 year old running around without the fact that you cannot feed your family properly in winter.
Get back on the phone and tell them it is urgent, tell them you cannot make food, and that there is no one who is able to help you.
    **EDIT**
To CokkZukker – I would just like to inform you that rent is paid to live in council homes, and that in the tenancy agreements ANY landlord, social housing or not, has to keep their properties in a state of good repair. Just because someone chooses to live in council property does not mean they are on benefits, and if they are why is it your business? This lady is entitled to benefits if she wants them because she is pregnant and already has a child. Crawl back under your rock.

  2. If the wire is faulty then do you think that your old cooker may not be broke afterall?
If so then return the new one!
Anyway. My cooker has been playing up for a while too but that’s because the elements are not very good anymore. I have to feed my 2 year old and DH so I just use the hob for veg etc and give my toddler the packs of sandwich type meat to put in her meals. The slices of beef or chicken that you can buy.
To cook other meats I use the George Forman grill. It is used nearly every day at the moment.

  3. sounds just like what im goin throuh at the moment my cookers broke and i have a 4year old and a husband to feed, luckly i can still use my hob n grill, best thing to do is call the council back and explain that you hav a young child to feed and its not practical not having an oven, but theres always meals u can get that you can microwave i kow its not the best but yopu need 2 eat, good luck with the council!

  4. i can only really think of 1 idea.. jacket potato and beans. handy microwave food. or pop over to a friends for tea one night, and a family member the next night.
i hope you get it sorted sooner rather than later.

  5. I hardly ever use the oven and I get along fine! Make rice and meatballs and sausages and things like that. Get a microwave!

  6. I agree with the above about phoning the council back and telling them about your 4 year old – that should move things quicker. Stir Fry is a good quick tea (if you still have your hob in action!!)
