I Am Deciding On A Stain/paint Color For My Kitchen Cabinets…any Suggestion?
We just moved into a new house. well, new to us. It has the old school small white tile counter tops, which are not our favorite, but out of our budget to replace right now. We have black appliances and a really dark deep burgundy wall. We also have lots of stainless and dark wood decorations through out. We are trying to decide on what to do to our cabinets. They need to be stained or painted. We have stainless knobs, but want to do dark wood (walnut) finsh on our cabinets. My fear is that it will be too much dark, and the countertops will be out of place. Do you think if we painted them white and had the white countertops and light floors with the dark appliances and wall color, it will look okay. Help! Usually I am a quick decision maker, but I keep going back and forth on this.

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the “painted” rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/
Personally, I wouldn’t go with a pure white, but a cream like “ivoire” (# 6127). White is such a bear to keep clean.
You can also take a photo of your room & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:http://www.roomvues.com/
You can get color suggestions & they’ll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
My personal opinion about white: in the day it’s nice and light and airy, but at night it’s cold and un-cozy. There is nothing like the warmth of natural wood. If you decide to paint the cabinets, I would definitely go with some color – like cream, sage or navy blue. The lighter colors would go better with the tile, but if you picked a navy blue it would go better with the burgundy wall. You could also paint the burgundy wall and lighten up everything – I don’t think it would matter that much if the appliances are dark.
Do white cabinets with black design on them. Stencil a small lined pattern in the center of each of the cabinets. Bring it all together with black trim detail painted on the edge of cabinet drawers/doors.
Make the design a medium sized design and you even could mix in a black and brown element to tie the whole thing together. The design should be something that entertwines such as some vines and flowers. Be creative. Why should your kitchen look like every other kitchen on the block???
The problem is most older kitchens are dark and little room for lighting.Actually new counter tops are relatively inexpensive.
I have seen some painted cabinets that look fab.Remember sweat equity will reap benefits in the end. That’s why they coined the phrase “DIY”.
My Best
you should just do the cabinets white like you said.
Painting the cabinets sparkling white will give the impression of a very clean, inviting, and cheerfully bright kitchen. Use high gloss enamel paint…even though it’s a pain to get off of your hands and out of your hair.
And…uhmmmm…………While you have the paint out, go ahead and paint that burgundy wall white too. Burgundy is cool color but in your case, this wall doesn’t match anything that you have and white paint is fairly cheap. And as long as you already have a big painting mess in your kitchen….paint that wall NOW or you’re never gonna want to get back to it later and it’s going to bug you for years.
Once you paint the cabinets and the wall….Stand back and reconsider your countertops. They are going to look much better!!! Just give the cabinet tops a good cleaning to brighten them up and refresh the grout. The tile that you described doesn’t sound too bad. It actually sounds really cute and in line with the character of the whole house.
Now, if your cabinets, walls, and counter tops are all white and your appliances are all black, then search the Dollar Stores to find some cute but cheap items to tie this all together. Maybe find some inexpensive solid black and solid white dishtowels/dishcloths. Or make some black and white themed curtains to hang in the kitchen window and a black throw rug in front of the kitchen sink.
Top it off with inexpensive accents in bright red or sunny yellow. I saw an adorable $10 bright red toaster just last week. And the Dollar Store has big red or yellow plastic cooking spoons, pancake turners, and cake spatulas for really cheap too. Put all of these utensils into a handy black and white ceramic jar next to the stove.
Can you return the stainless steel knobs and exchange them for either black and white stripes or checks, shiny red ceramic, or bright and sunny yellow ones?
This is going to be awesome!
My most important advice is: Slow Down and think about it. This doesn’t have to be completed fast. I’m impulsive too and I’ve learned the value of sleeping on it rather than rushing and making a bad decision. It’s going to be more fun to collect stuff, over time, that pulls your kitchen all together. You don’t have to run out and buy everything today.
