Do You Need Turn On The Air Vent Hood On A Gas Stove At All Times While Cooking?

Build Your Own Wood Burning Pizza Oven

I am being told that every time I want to use my gas stove, I have to turn on the vent hood. Is that really true? I am used to an electric stove, so I apologize if this sounds like a dumb question.

The vent hood is mostly for removing steam, smoke, and heat. It’s not necessary to run the vent hood just because you have a gas flame on. Natural gas is mostly methane that has an odorant infused in it. Natural gas is odorless and colorless. So, the odorant is added to make leak detection easy. When natural gas burns, it burns so completely that the only by product is small amounts of carbon dioxide and a bit of sulphur gas. But, this is easily dissipated in your house by natural circulation.
Some gas stoves used for heat are called ventless stoves, because they require no chimney or stove pipe to remove the exhaust gases. This is because the natural gas they burn is burned so completely that no venting or exhaust is necessary.
