  1. I like the slow cooker.

  2. A slow cooker is a little electric pot you put food in and leave alone for hours before the food is done cooking. an electric skillet looks like a regular skillet but you plug it in instead of using it on a burner.

  3. A slow cooker holds the heat better, uses less electricity, and uses indirect heating.

  4. Like you said, the added bonus of a electric skillet is that you can seer the meat. SOOOOO…………you have my answer.

I would buy the slow cooker. You can sear the meat on the stovetop in a pan prior to placing in the slow cooker. The advantage to the slow cooker is that you can leave it unattended all day long and have a meal upon your return home.

The skillet is for shorter duration recipes and needs to be watched at all times. The skillet temperature is harder to maintain on a low setting also than the slow cooker.

Buy a slow cooker of the size that you think you will be cooking the quantity that you normally do. You don’t want one too large or too small for your daily recipes.

The slow cooker is more portable for taking to potlucks too.

The electric skillet is great for frying fish and chicken, where you need to maintain a even temperature to achieve perfection on these hard to cook foods. If you are familiar with cast iron pans, these work even better than a electric skillet as they hold the heat.

My vote is slow cooker and cast iron 12 inch skillet.

  6. I would definately buy the slow cooker. It comes in handy for soups, pastas, dips, and pot roasts. And electric skillet is alright, my great grandmother had one and it cooked the best fried chicken. But I think you could get more use and save more electricity by getting the slow cooker. Plus it would be easier to take somewhere.

  7. The slow cooker can hold more.
The skillet can be used as a slow cooker but you are limited on how much you can put in it. If it can fit a pot roast and all the veggies and gravy then that is about as big as you need. I think I use my slow cooker a bit more than I use the electric skillet. How ever I do like to sear the meat in the skillet and then reduce the heat and finish it off that way.
What the heck buy both. You can buy both fairly inexpensively(especially if you go some place like Bed Bath And Beyond and use the 20%off coupon!)
I do have one that has an interchangeable piece so I can use it as a slow cooker and as an electric skillet.
